Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at Tyler. We are a young and growing department bearing a sole mission to offer the best higher education and up-to-date technological research in mechanical engineering relevance to the society. Our program offers a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering (BSME) degree and a master of science in mechanical engineering (MSME) degree.

Our areas of study in mechanical engineering at UT Tyler cover mechanical system design, thermo-fluid sciences, instrumentation, manufacturing, CAD/CAM/CAE, mechatronics and controls, materials science and metrology, and numerical simulations. The undergraduate program is fully accredited and we intend to teach students both theories and practices of mechanical engineering which is implemented by conducting laboratories along with lectures for many courses through the undergraduate curriculum. This leads students to aim at real-world problems solving skills during learning in order for them to be well prepared for working in industry after graduation. We are proud of our seniors’ outstanding passing rate of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exams in the State of Texas and the successful careers of our graduates. In addition, undergraduate research is highly encouraged when opportunities exist.

The graduate program is flexible in our department. We welcome students with undergraduate disciplines in sciences, technology, engineering other than mechanical majors and mathematics to apply and enter into our MSME degree program. As a young and energetic department, our faculty are striving for research excellence to develop advanced traditional and interdisciplinary programs involving such areas as nonlinear analysis of structures, new products development and production management, active aircraft noise control and deicing, advanced finite element analysis, and intelligent mechatronics. The ME faculty with strengths in the aforementioned areas are continuously seeking collaboration opportunities and sponsored projects from industry, state and federal agencies to strengthen our research program.

Our major goal is to continue improving ourselves for excellence in all facets of engineering education, research and service for the societies nationally and internationally. In 2007, the Department has moved into the Bill Ratliff Engineering & Science Complex where spacious classrooms and laboratories with state-of-the-art facilities are housed. I hope our website will provide you with clear and attractive information regarding our undergraduate and graduate curricula and programs, and the contemporary learning environment. I also encourage you to check back periodically for updated news items that will highlight noteworthy activities of students, faculty and alumni, and scholarship and internship opportunities.
