| A recent NSF sponsored grant has allowed us to better integrate the Product Realization Process into our Mechanical Engineering Curriculum through the use of desktop sized manufacturing equipment. This equipment has been highly integrated into our Introduction to Manufacturing course, MENG 2319, (required in our new curriculum) and an newly created senior level technical elective, Computer-Aided Manufacturing (MENG 4324). The main Guide, which provides supplemental exercises for these courses, may be found at by clicking here. Additional courses have been able to successfully integrate pieces of this equipment to enhance their content. Links to allow you to download PDF versions of these additional exercises are included below: |
| Fundamentals of Engineering (ENGR 1300)
Introduction to Rapid Prototyping: This exercise allows small groups of students to rapid prototype a simple motor mount for an electric motor which is fully usable for their semester design projects. |
| Design for Manufacturing (MENG 4320)
Injection Mold Design Project: This project uses part of an existing mold and has a small group of students design tooling with a common, replaceable insert. Each student subsequently designs a simple variation of the insert and parts are then produced using each insert. |
| Introduction to Industrial Robotics (MENG 4323)
Robot Centered CIM Cell Project: This exercise simulates a computer integrated manufacturing cell consisting of part feeder, a CNC lathe, a CNC mill, a conveyor for finished parts and an obstacle all centered around the desktop robot. Small groups of students work together to work out the basic logic and communications, but each student individually programs the point locations for their specific CIM cell geometry. |
