Welcome to the Mechanical Engineering Department!
The Mechanical Engineering
program at the University of Texas at Tyler was established in 1997 and
is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012 - telephone: (410) 347-7700.
We are proud of our student-focused, hands-on approach to engineering education.
The Mechanical Engineering program produces graduates who are sought after by employers and graduate schools. The department stresses the development of strong professional knowledge, critical thinking, teamwork and communication skills. Mechanical Engineering is a broad field encompassing activities including research, development, design, testing, manufacturing operations, maintenance, marketing and sales. Computer-aided design and analysis, thermal and fluid systems, manufacturing processes and control, bioengineering, aerospace systems, and instrumentation are several of the many areas that require mechanical engineering skills.
Student chapters of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) afford opportunities to network with professional engineers and to learn about career options. Activities include field trips and inplant tours of local companies.
Graduates work in organizations ranging from large corporations to government offices to small consulting firms. Mechanical engineers may become managers of large engineering projects, inplant managers, owners of their own firms, or executives in large corporations. The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering provides a solid foundation for graduate study research leading to the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, available with both thesis and non-thesis options.
ASME Students Win ASCE Volleyball Tournament
There were about a dozen mechanical engineering students who showed up for the volleyball invitational tournament help on September 16th. The ASCE student chapter hosted the event. Other participants included about a dozen civil engineering students, a handful of electrical engineers, and some engineering faculty. All the students played in a bracket style tournament and the ME students won every game! There were pizza and drinks sponsored by the departments and everyone involved had a great time! The MENG ASME chapter would like to thank the ASCE student chapter for setting up the tournament and also annouce that ASME is planning a disc golf tournament in October or November. The Society Of Automotive Engineering (SAE) Collegiate Chapter is being established in the CECS and will host a pool + ping pong + table hockey tournament in Spring 2011. Details will be announced soon.
